    About Trip

Travel to the birthplace of Lord Buddha

While much of the world seems to think that Lord Buddha, the founder of Buddhism was born in India, the truth is he was actually born in Nepal.  His birthplace is a holy place as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located in Lumbini, it is more than just a marker. It is a most sacred place steeped in spirituality. An extreme sense of peace washes over you as you enter the grounds. There are many wonderful monasteries to explore, erected by various countries from around the world. Each of these monasteries reflects Buddhism as best expressed by their nation’s culture.

You don’t have to be Buddhist to truly appreciate the wonders of Lumbini. This site has not been commercialized and is open to anyone to visit. It is deep in history as well as amazing beauty. No place on earth pays homage to the founder of Buddhism as Lumbini does.

Trekking Explore Nepal is pleased to be able to offer this amazing tour of Lumbini. It is just a short flight from Kathmandu, so you can be quickly exploring the amazing sights of his holy of holy places.

    ARRIVAL AT LUMBINI

The Lumbini experience begins as you board the plane at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. The flight originates at the domestic terminal here, and within an hour you have arrived at Lumbini. Travel by private car to your hotel where you can check in and enjoy lunch.

Following lunch, take a trip to the entrance of Lumbini where you will walk through the gardens to discover the Maya Devi Temple. This is the holy place where Lord Buddha was born 25 centuries ago. Tour the temple and see remains of the original temple that was destroyed. In the rock is a tiny footprint said to have been left by Lord Buddha himself when he took seven miraculous footsteps upon his birth.

Outside, sit at the reflecting pond where his mother, Queen Maya Devi took a bath before giving birth here in what was the wilderness. The pool provides a wonderful place to relax and contemplate. Around the site are monuments from the Emperor Ashoka who designated this place as the birthplace of Lord Buddha with a column over 2000 years ago. You can see this original column next to the temple. In the evening, return to your hotel for the night.
